Dr.
Malena works with two teams that do very special work with dental
implants. The Cranial-Facial Malformation Team at Children's
Memorial Hospital and the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck
Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Both teams
take care of patients that have severe oral and facial damage resulting
from birth defects, accidents or cancer surgery.
When Dr.Branemark first conceived of implanting devices into bone, his intention was to solve problems for patients that are missing parts of their face such as noses and ears. The large market for dental implants has taken away most of the "news" about this extremely important use of osteointegrated titanium implants, but it is still a primary role for the devices.
