Because
we are a periodontics office, most of the patients that come to us do so
in order to save their original teeth. We see very few patients with
upper and lower dentures. For this reason, when we replace teeth
with implants we are usually replacing strategic teeth that have been lost
from periodontal disease.
Often this means that we are replacing a single tooth surrounded by natural teeth. This use of implants frequently requires special attention to the replacement of bone that has been lost due to periodontitis (the most frequent cause of tooth loss) and perhaps significant attention to reconstruction of some of the natural features of the gum line that we take for granted in natural teeth. For this reason we sometimes need to combine the surgical placement of the implant (or the second stage, the uncovering of the healed implant) with bone and/or gingival grafts. These procedures do not add much to the surgical experience from the patient's perspective, but are highly specialized minature plastic surgery techniques that are very important to the aesthetics and natural appearance of the final product.
