Questions & Answers

Patients with mitral valve reflux, an artificial heart valve, a new artificial joint or other medical conditions may require prophylactic antibiotics before dental treatment. Check with your physician if you think you might have such a condition.
In addition to treating gingivitis and periodontitis, patients are frequently referred to periodontists for the diagnosis and treatment of a number of dental problems.  Most of these involve diseases of the soft tissues of the mouth.  Some of these patients require a biopsy specimen in order to reach a diagnosis.  There are a number of causes of stomatitis (inflammation of the oral tissues) including viral, fungal, bacterial, and side effects of a number of drugs.  In addition, some patients have medical conditions that cause or exacerbate oral problems, specifically patients with immune suppression diseases and transplant patients.

Periodontists sometimes diagnose and treat TMD (also known as TMJ) problems involving pain and disfunction of the muscles and joints of the masticatory apparatus.

Periodontists frequently team up with endodontists (root canal specialists) to solve problems that are combination of both domains. Some of these are teeth that have developed resorption (a condition where part of the tooth dissolves without any known reason) and others are molars that require amputation of one or more roots.
