Some
patients need to take antibiotics before routine dental cleaning and
other dental procedures. These patients include those with mitral
valve reflux, recent vascular surgery and
immunosuppressive conditions including diseases and treatments that
cause immunosuppression (chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant, organ transplant,
HIV).
The published guidelines for who, what, where and when for antibiotic coverage continue to change over the years, and the final authority regarding your specific situation is the physician who takes care of your particular condition. In general, most folks who need antibiotic coverage for dental treatment have been thoroughly informed about their situation by their doctor. If it has been a number of years since you have discussed it with your doctor, it would be wise to ask for an update because the standard of care changes periodically. In most cases the American Heart Association's guidelines are followed, even if your condition is not heart related, such as a new total joint replacement.
