Treatment of inflammatory periodontal disease must be individually crafted to the unique characteristics of each individual patient after a careful examination. Treatment for gingivitis or early periodontitis may be as simple as knowing how the disease starts and learning how to most effectively use a toothbrush and floss. Knowledge is perhaps the most important component of treatment, that is why we built this website! If you have searched the web or the library for treatment protocols for periodontitis, you probably have seen a "standard" treatment plan that consists of oral hygiene instructions, four one-hour root planning ("deep cleaning") appointments followed by a re-evaluation with occlusal adjustments, then surgery for all areas that remain 5 millimeters deep and finally, maintenance appointments every three months. The facts are that very few patients that come to a periodontist for treatment fit that "standard" mold. Many of our patients have been partially treated by their general dentist or hygienist. A substantial number of patients have an entirely different pattern of periodontal disease involvement that does not even conform to the orthodox view that periodontitis is the result of insufficient oral hygiene practices. Sophisticated periodontal therapy increasingly is dependent on our ability to fine-tune treatment to the specific genetic characteristics of each patient, the distinctive character of the oral flora of their mouth and the unique aspects of each person's medical and dental history. An appropriate treatment plan can only be established after careful consideration of the patient's medical and dental history, the depth and pattern of the periodontal pockets, and the patient and their dentist's treatment objectives. Furthermore, the patient's financial resources usually need to be considered. Fortunately, the advance of most varieties of periodontitis is interrupted at the beginning of treatment and we usually can accommodate the idiosyncrasies of insurance carriers.
